Muralug (Prince of Wales Island)
A small waterhole known as 'Dugong story' in the southern ranges. An old legend has it that a dugong was frequenting the waterhole which was also 'bottomless".
This was inspiration for myself, Peter Holt, karl Sprogis & Steve Jacobs to carry out an underwater exploration back in 1980. Steve flew us in the helicopter & after careful planning of decompression stops etc., we dived. We touched bottom at 9 metres & found some rather big eels & several jungle perch.
The photo was provided by Peter Nix & it depicts the Mills family of the Federal Hotel having a picnic at Dugong Story in 1920.
